The world’s longest certified “Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race “, held annually by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon team, ended at midnight on August 7th in the New York suburbs.
10 elite runners from 7 countries started the Race 52 days prior on June 17th. Athletes were given 18 hours daily – from 6am to midnight – to cover the necessary 60 miles / 96km on the concrete lap around a college, a baseball field, and playgrounds to meet the deadline. The lap is only 883 meters.
6 runners were successful in covering the whole distance of 3100 miles in the 52 days given. Extremely hot and humid weather and utmost physical loads did not allow the four other athletes to finish the 22nd edition of the Race.
Kobi Oren from Israel and Usika Mukenhammer successfully debuted in the 3100 Mile Race this year. Yolanda Holder and William Sichel, who each have one finish to their credit, could not conquer the entire distance this time around. But all who dared to appear at the starting line of this Everest of multi day running unmistakably deserve great respect and support.
Sri Chinmoy initiated the 3100 Mile Race in 1997 with faith in boundless possibilities of the human spirit. Since then, 43 athletes have crossed the finish line of the 3100 Mile race. Many of those have come back more than once.
